One day, golden tussocks. The next, a winter wonderland.

Our recent trip to Rex Simpson Hut perfectly captured just how quickly the mountains can change. We walked in through sunlit alpine grasslands with barely a patch of snow to be seen, and settled into the hut just as the season’s first major storm arrived… then watched it snow. And snow. And snow.

By morning, the landscape had been completely transformed. Familiar ridges, tarns and tussocks disappeared beneath a blanket of fresh powder, turning the Two Thumb Range into a true winter playground.

There’s now well over a metre of snow at Rex Simpson Hut, with more still falling. Winter has well and truly arrived, and the season is off to an incredible start.

Bring on winter! ❄️🏔️
