Rediscovering old haunts — we ski toured into Middle Gorge Hut in the Mistake Valley via Mistake Peak and struck gold with some epic powder on the way in! ❄️⛷️

Inside the hut, we uncovered a time capsule — the original hut book with entries from none other than Gottlieb Braun-Elwert dating back to 1985. This little gem of a hut was one of Gottlieb’s winter ski touring bases, and in classic Gottlieb fashion, he’d 4WD in each autumn to restock the firewood for the winter missions ahead. 🔥

The hut book is full of names that shaped the local mountain scene — Bruce & Liz Scott from Godley Peaks, Bruce & Alan Foote from Mt Dobson, John Sweney from Twizel, Will Murray from Glenmore, and many more. @elke_mountain_guide first visited in 1987 during one of Gottlieb’s restock missions. A reminder of the deep roots and strong community that keep this region alive and kicking.

Middle Gorge might be tucked away, but it holds a big piece of our local alpine history. 🏔️💙
