Sometimes the mountains rewrite the plan.

Our Winter Mountaineering Course was originally heading for Caroline Hut, but with more than a metre of fresh snow forecast and avalanche danger climbing rapidly, it was time for Plan B. Rex Simpson Hut became our classroom instead.

Far from being a compromise, the conditions created an incredible opportunity to focus on the skills that matter most when winter throws everything at you. Avalanche awareness and companion rescue, route selection, whiteout navigation, mountain weather, snow shelters, cold weather management, and decision-making all became part of the week.

There were no bluebird summit days this time, but there was no shortage of learning. Experiencing a major winter storm firsthand, adapting to changing conditions, and making safe decisions are all part of becoming a capable mountaineer.

The mountains don’t always give you the trip you planned — but they often give you the lessons you need.

❄️ Over a metre of fresh snow.
🏔️ Real winter conditions.
📍 Countless practical skills to take into the mountains with confidence.
