Learning the foundations of safe mountain travel up at Caroline Hut and on the Ball Glacier 🏔️

Our latest Introductory Mountaineering Course was all about building real, practical skills for moving confidently in alpine terrain. Over a great few days of weather, the group worked on:

🧭 Route-finding and terrain choice on alpine rock, snow and ice
⛏️ Efficient mountain movement — cramponing, ice axe use & balance
🪢 Rope systems and safe travel on glaciated terrain
🌦️ Reading the weather and knowing when to move — and when to turn back

They made the most of perfect conditions, then timed their exit ahead of the next weather system — a lesson in itself.

This is what mountaineering is about: smart decisions, solid skills, and enjoying wild places safely.
