As we set off for Rex Simpson Hut, the dark northwesterly clouds were building ominously over the head of the Godley Valley. From the eastern side of Lake Tekapo it looked like we might just stay clear of them… but halfway up the hill the weather had other plans.

Rain quickly turned to snow, and within minutes huge flakes were drifting down around us, transforming the landscape with every step. By the time we reached the shelter of Rex Simpson Hut, it was time to light the fire, hang up the wet gear, and settle in.

Then, just a few hours later, the clouds parted.

Sunshine poured across a fresh blanket of snow, revealing an incredible white landscape stretching to the turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo. One moment wild and wintry, the next calm and brilliant.

If there’s one thing that New Zealand weather teaches you, it’s that it’ll change. 🌬️🌦️❄️☀️

Snowshoeing season is well underway, and days like this are exactly why we love winter in the Two Thumb Range.
