Mount Sefton
An alpine start from our tent camp, weaving through crevasses on the Douglas Glacier as first light crept in. A cold southerly breeze on the NW Ridge, firm frozen snow underfoot, and the western side of the Main Divide stretching north in perfect clarity — Aoraki front and centre.
Quick glacier travel in crisp conditions, then slow, deliberate footwork across the summit ice cap, glassy sastrugi demanding full attention. Nine pitches on solid anchors to round out a proper alpine climb.
Sefton doesn’t get guided often; conditions and weather need to align perfectly, the walk-in access is long and difficult — even fly-in access is no guarantee, as weather can change quickly and you’re exposed to the elements.
A great day out with Nina on a beautiful, understated peak. She’d had Mount Sefton in her sights for a long time — and after plenty of planning, patience, and reshuffling, we managed to achieve her dream.
