Mountain huts don’t maintain themselves. 🏔️🔨

High in Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, Caroline Hut has stood up to countless storms, heavy snowfalls, fierce winds and blazing alpine sunshine over the years. It’s all part of life in the high mountains — but eventually even the toughest huts need a little TLC.

The old windows had started to leak, so this winter it was time for a well-earned facelift. With summer being Caroline Hut’s busiest season, essential maintenance has to be squeezed into the quieter months — and even then, the work depends on finding a weather window and not having too much snow around the hut.

A huge thank you to Lain Hellmrich and the fantastic team from High Country Carpentry for making the trip into the mountains and doing such an outstanding job. It’s not your average building site… although we’d argue the office views are pretty hard to beat! ❄️🪟⛰️ (Even if it is a little cold on the hands.)

Thanks for helping keep Caroline Hut in top condition for the many climbers, mountaineers and adventurers who call it home each season.
