Mountain Skills for Adventure Races

Learn how to use crampons and ice axe safely

With GODZONE Chapter 13 heading to the Mackenzie and Spirited Women bringing another wave of adventure to Tekapo, there’s no better time to build your mountain skills.

The summer of 2026/27 is shaping up to be a big one for adventure in the Mackenzie. With GODZONE bringing its expedition race to the Aoraki/Mount Cook region in late February 2027, followed shortly afterwards by Spirited Women in Tekapo, there’s plenty of inspiration to get out there, learn something new and take on a few challenges.

For some, that might mean preparing for a major adventure race. For others, it could be the first steps towards exploring alpine terrain beyond the walking tracks.

Whatever your motivation, developing some practical mountaineering and navigation skills is a great investment in your future adventures.

Taking on GODZONE?

Get your mountaineering skills sorted.

GODZONE Chapter 13 – Aoraki/Mount Cook – is bringing competitors to the Mackenzie from 25 February 2027. With a significant mountaineering component now confirmed, teams have some additional technical skills and equipment to think about as they prepare.

The newly released mountaineering requirements include a harness, double lanyard, micro ascender, auto-locking carabiners, mountaineering boots (minimum B1 rating), crampons (minimum C1 rating), ice axe and mountaineering helmet.

Having the right equipment is one thing. Knowing how to use it properly, confidently and efficiently is another.

Mountaineering equipment can be unfamiliar territory for even experienced adventure racers. Understanding how your harness and safety systems work, managing lanyards and carabiners, moving efficiently in crampons and using an ice axe are all skills worth practising before race day.

It’s also important to understand the limitations of your equipment, how different systems work together, and how to make good decisions when moving through unfamiliar alpine terrain.

In an expedition race, these skills aren’t necessarily being used in ideal conditions. You might be tired, cold, short on sleep or working under time pressure. Familiarity and practice make a big difference when it matters.

Learn in the mountains

Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park

What better place to develop your mountaineering skills than in the mountains themselves?

Our Introductory Mountaineering Course is designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of travelling safely in alpine terrain. Based at our privately owned Caroline Hut in Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, directly opposite the impressive Caroline Face of Aoraki / Mount Cook, it’s a fantastic environment in which to learn and put new skills into practice.

Over four or five days, you’ll get hands-on experience with:
✓ Snow and ice travel: Using crampons and an ice axe safely and efficiently, including self-arrest techniques.
✓ Alpine movement: Moving efficiently over snow, ice and mixed mountain terrain.
✓ Alpine Navigation: Understanding alpine terrain, interpreting the map and using a compass strategically.
✓ Route selection: Reading the terrain and choosing appropriate routes through the mountains.
✓ Rope skills: Knots, rope management, belaying and abseiling.
✓ Weather and risk awareness: Recognising hazards, assessing conditions and making sound decisions.

You’ll learn from experienced IFMGA / NZMGA mountain guides, with plenty of opportunity to practise skills in the field rather than simply talking about them.

No previous mountaineering experience is required, although good fitness and experience hiking over rough, steep and untracked terrain are important.

While the course provides a great introduction to mountaineering, we can also tailor the content to suit particular objectives and experience levels. For GODZONE teams, this could mean putting together a programme that focuses on the specific skills and equipment your team needs to become more confident and competent in alpine terrain.

Navigation

A skill that can change everything

Of course, mountaineering isn’t just about ropes, crampons and ice axes. Knowing where you are, where you’re going and how to choose a good route is fundamental to travelling safely and efficiently in the mountains.

For adventure racers in particular, navigation is often one of the most valuable skills to invest time in. Being able to interpret a map, use a compass, understand terrain and make good route choices can save significant time and energy.

And it’s not just about being able to find a checkpoint. Good navigation involves constantly interpreting the landscape, anticipating what’s ahead, recognising when a route isn’t working and knowing when to change your plan.

These decisions become even more challenging when you’re tired, the weather changes or visibility deteriorates.

We run a range of navigation courses, from the fundamentals of map and compass use through to advanced alpine navigation and route-finding. We also offer women-focused navigation training for adventure racers.

If you’re preparing for Spirited Women or another adventure race, our Navigation Training for Spirited Women article is a good place to start.

Celebrating women in adventure

Spirited Women 2027

We’re also really excited to be supporting Spirited Women 2027, which is coming to Tekapo from 12–14 March.

Spirited Women is all about getting women together, learning new skills, challenging themselves and having a great adventure along the way. It’s an event that we love being involved with, particularly with Tekapo and the Mackenzie right on our doorstep.

As part of our involvement, Alpine Recreation is sponsoring a pretty special prize: a four-day mountaineering course for a lucky team of four women!

We’re also putting together one of the mystery challenges for the event, so there’ll be a little Alpine Recreation involvement out on the course as well.

Whether you’re a seasoned adventure racer or just starting out, we love seeing more women getting involved in outdoor adventures and discovering what they’re capable of.

And who knows? Perhaps the winning team will discover a new passion for mountaineering along the way!

Make this summer your opportunity to upskill

With both GODZONE and Spirited Women taking place in the Mackenzie, there’s a great opportunity to combine your training with a few days learning new skills in some of New Zealand’s most spectacular mountain terrain.

You don’t need to be preparing for an event to benefit, either. Mountaineering skills open up a whole new world of alpine adventures, while better navigation skills bring confidence and independence to everything from backcountry hiking to multi-day expeditions.

We have scheduled introductory mountaineering courses running throughout the summer season, and we’re happy to put together custom courses for teams and groups wanting to focus on particular skills or objectives.

Whether you’re preparing for GODZONE, getting your Spirited Women team together or simply keen to take your mountain adventures to the next level, we’d love to help.
