Explore Tekapo and its stunning mountain and lake views by bike

Located in the heart of New Zealand’s Mackenzie Region, Lake Tekapo is fast becoming one of the country’s top destinations for cycling, stargazing, and outdoor adventure. In summer, visitors flock to the region to ride its scenic canal roads, explore forested trails in the regional park, and tackle epic high-country gravel routes. Tekapo is also the official starting point of the world-renowned Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, making it a must-visit for bikepackers and touring cyclists alike.

Photographers love the lake’s surreal turquoise hues and sweeping alpine vistas, while adventure-seekers can add 4WD tours or guided backcountry treks to their itinerary. In winter, the region shifts gears into a snowy playground for ski touring, snowshoeing, and snowboarding. Tekapo is also part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, offering some of the clearest, most awe-inspiring night skies in the world.

You’ve probably arrived in Tekapo ready for an adventure — and if you’ve got a few hours to spare or a rest day in your itinerary, a ride on one of our local bike and cycle trails is the perfect way to explore. It's also a great way to stretch your legs and get warmed up before taking on one of our alpine hikes and treks, mountaineering instruction courses or guided ascents, or ski and split-board tours. We've put together a list of our top cycle routes and day rides around Tekapo — many are accessible from Alpine Recreation’s Edelweiss Lodge or just a short drive away.

Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail

Moderate | 55 km | Grade 2–3

Start your journey on one of New Zealand’s premier Great Rides — the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. This scenic section begins in Lake Tekapo and follows the tranquil hydro canals, winds through golden tussock country, and descends toward the brilliant blue waters of Lake Pukaki, all while offering epic views of Aoraki / Mount Cook.

It’s a rewarding long day ride or the perfect starting point for a multi-day cycling adventure. The route can be easily paired with a shuttle for a convenient one-way trip and is ideal for reasonably fit riders on gravel-capable bikes.

Tekapo Regional Park Trails

Easy-Moderate | 5-10km | Grade 1-3

The Tekapo Regional Park Trails offer fun and family-friendly loops starting and finishing at the car park on Lilybank Road, just a few minutes from the town centre.

There are multiple variations and a network of short trails winds through pine forest and open clearings with views of Lake Tekapo, featuring mostly gravel and dirt surfaces with some gentle undulations.

Riders can complete a relaxed circuit in 30 to 60 minutes, making it perfect for anyone looking for a quick ride close to town.

Combine with the Lagoon Trail and Lakeside Track for a longer ride.

Lake Tekapo Lagoon Trail

Moderate | 8km | Grade 2

One of Tekapo's newest trails, crossing Sawdon Station, with interesting glacial rock features and a secluded tarn surrounded by willow trees. An open track with panoramic views in all directions. Mountain bike following light blue markers. A good option for a shorter afternoon ride and quiet - it's unlikely you'll encounter many others.

The loop starts from the top south-eastern corner of the Tekapo Regional Park and is a good option to extend the Regional Park Trails.

Lake Tekapo Lakeside Track

Easy | 5 km return | Grade 1

A gentle and picturesque cruise along the Tekapo lakeshore to Pines Beach and Willow Bay. Return the same way or link up with the Tekapo Regional Park Trails.

Lake Tekapo Peninsula Track

Moderate | 5km | Grade 2

A beautiful loop with wonderful views of Lake Tekapo and its surrounding peaks from the peninsula.

Drive or ride along the Godley Peaks Road until you pass the Mt. John summit road. Continue another 1.5km and you will see a small carpark on your right by a block of trees. The track follows orange marker posts in a loop around the peninsula - best done in a clockwise direction.

Richmond Trail

Advanced | 13km | Grade 4

The track is 13km one-way and part of the Te Araroa Trail. The Richmond travels along an old glacial terrace through tussocks and patches of native vegetation, providing stunning views of Lake Tekapo and surrounding mountains. It is a steep descent down the track near Boundary Stream to Lilybank Road. From Lake Tekapo township, drive up the Lilybank Road, along the eastern side of the lake.

You can start from Boundary Creek or Roundhill Ski Area access road. It is recommended to start at the Roundhill end and bike up the gravel access road to the start of the trail.
