Ski Touring & Split-boarding Reviews

Reviews and feedback from guests on our Backcountry Courses, Ski Touring and Split-boarding trips.

I was part of a group of 6 that did a 3 day ski touring trip in the two thumb range with Alpine Rec. A superb experience. Well organised, great equipment, information and facilities. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone!
Alpine Recreation run wonderful ski touring trips in the Two Thumb Range near Tekapo NZ. Stunning views of Aoraki and friends. Yummy food and a warm dry hut. Thoroughly recommend.
I went on two back to back ski-touring trips with Alpine Recreation this year. The first was to Rex Simpson Hut in the Two Thumb Range, the second was to Lady Emily Hut in the Lieberg Range. The trips were quite contrasting; the first with brilliant weather, large group and mellow terrain. The second with variable weather, small group and more technical terrain.
I thoroughly enjoyed both trips, for their unique experiences. I would definitely have not been able to achieve either if it weren't for Alpine Recreation. Their organisational abilities in the first trip made it run smoothly, despite one of our members requiring a premature helicopter flight out. Their continual decision making throughout the second trip enabling us to get far more out of it than expected.
Thank you very much Axel, Roy and the Alpine Recreation Team!
Outstanding experience, guides and support team were so knowledgeable, supportive and adaptable with the everchanging environment!
Ski Touring based at Falcon's Nest Hut in the Liebig Range NZ. A seriously big adventure - brilliantly managed and led by Elke and Michael. Can't wait to do it again.

Thank you very much Axel, Roy and the Alpine Recreation Team!
We got exactly what we wanted and more. Kids loved it. It is a very good parent-child bonding experience.
We completed a 5 day Nordic Skiing expedition out of the Rex Simpson hut in July 2021. Our two guides, Axel and Pete introduced our group to the alpine area and nordic skiing with a no nonsense skills based approach. The high trust in our guides enabled a willingness for the group to take on the changing snow conditions and extend ourselves as our abilities allowed. Highly recommended.
A thoroughly enjoyable Nordic Skiing trip. The Edelweiss lodge was a lovely place to stay before the trip, it was clean, comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. During our 4 day skiing trip our guides looked after us really well and we racked up plenty of hours skiing. The conditions were challenging but the routes selected were chosen accordingly.
I felt that Gottlieb rated my abilities and pushed me to a new level. Everything very professional and safe.
I thoroughly enjoyed my ski tour with Alpine Recrecreation. The staff, guides and organisation were exceptional. Highly recommend.
We used Alpine Recreation for two trips- the first was their Ski The Glaciers and the second was a privately guided week. Mark and Cillian were both excellent guides, both trips felt like the trip of a lifetime. It was an incredible experience being so close to Aoraki. They tailored both trips around us- with instruction as well as adventure. Even on the rare bad weather day, the guides are so knowledgeable and flexible- it felt great progressing with our mountaineering skills. We stayed at Kelman hut and Mueller hut, but our favourite was Caroline hut! Well stocked and beautifully built by Gottlieb. Everyone at Alpine Rec was so friendly and really responsive in the planning of the trip. It's clearly a very special bunch of people. It feels pretty remarkable watching documentaries like Symphony on Skis or Enchainment or visiting the mountaineering centre in Mt Cook village and seeing what a special history Apline Rec and it's founders have.
The trip was amazing - a great venue and wonderful terrain to ski! New Zealand is a truly special place. I am extremely impressed with your operation - the trip was VERY well organized, executed, and was very well-tailored to all of our needs, abilities, interests etc. The guide was PHENOMENAL! He did a great job of balancing safety, while finding the best possible skiing objectives available.....all while dealing with people of differing abilities and experience. He also provided excellent educational training (both theory and practical) on avalanche and mountain safety. Moreover, he inspired everyone to push themselves physically and mentally (within safety limits of course) to have some epic days
Our guide was a legend. Lots of good learning with a fantastic three days of ski touring. Great use of time with a limited weather window. Top notch.
Holy smokes, up there with the best 5 days of our lives! Ski touring around the Tasman, Murchison and Bonney-Darwin glaciers with the most inspiring, knowledgable, capable wahine / guide Elke. We felt so fortunate to have her as guide with her depth of knowledge of the area, special family ties to the region and awesome personality. Huge thanks to Elke and the rest of the Alpine Recreation team, you're all legends - greatest time ever! Learnt SO many things.
Great trip to Tasman Saddle ski touring. Weather just average, but some awesome skiing when we got out. Our guides, Elke & Karen, were super helpful, friendly, very safety conscious and managed the group well, especially as we didn’t know one another before heading out! Good food, a freezing hut, but great times.
I had an awesome 4 days ski touring with Alpine Recreation up in Kelman hut on the Tasman glacier. Our guide Cilian was great, and we made the most of some fresh snow, while still adapting to the risks. The rest of the team was professional and helped us make the most of our first day when we couldn’t fly up. We’ll definitely be coming back for another trip with these guys.

I had the time of my life with the crew from Alpine Recreation high up at the Tasman Glacier. The guiding was absolutely professional and I felt very safe at any time. The organization in front was totally uncomplicated and everything was on point. If you're searching for any guided mountain activity around Tekapo I can deeply recommend Alpine Recreation and you can trust these guys totally. I´ll come back for sure.
I just completed the Symphony on Skis tour from Fox Glacier on the West Coast to the Godley River on the east via the Graham Saddle, Tasman, Murchison and Aida Glaciers. It was an epic trip with very interesting terrain. The guides Axel and Anna ran an exceptional tour navigating weather, snow conditions and tricky terrain. Very processional operation and I would highly recommend Alpine Recreation. This was my second tip and no doubt I will need to come back again for more punishment.
Alpine Recreation is a fantastic family based adventure company. I've always received fantastic personal service throughout the 8 years I've been lucky enough to have these guys taking me on adventures. Another very enjoyable trip in 2020. Great company both guides Pete and Axel and fellow tourers.
5/10/2020 Just been back for my second trip this year. Had a fantastic time doing the Symphony on skis. Very complicated trip to put together with challenging conditions but the whole team at Alpine Recreation persevered and made it happen. Thanks so much. Will be back in 2021 for more adventures.
I had a great experience discovering the West and East sides of the Main Divide with Alpine Recreation. My guides Axel and Anna were highly professional and available to provide suggestions and tips at any time. The logistic was great: transportation, food, gear when needed were organized perfectly and their knowledge of the area allowed them to have plenty of alternatives in case of the weather or snow pack required to change plans.
I definitely recommend Alpine Recreation to discover the amazing beauty of the NZ Alps.
I just wanted to again say thanks for the organisation of the guided course for me. Elke was extremely helpful, patient and it was a real privilege to spend time and receive guidance in the mountains with an absolute professional.
Two of us did the a 4 day introduction to backcountry skiing/splitboarding course this August. Excellent guiding and instruction, cosy and well resourced hut, and a well organised family business offering value for money. Thank you!
We booked a 5 day backcountry skiing course which was to be held in the Two Thumb Range but due to lack of snow we decided on the option to go into the Tasman Glacier, and were so glad we did! What an amazing experience. The weather gods were on our side, and we had a phenomenal guide, Axel Reiser. I can't say enough how much Axel delivered this course with Kiwi warmth and German precision. His knowledge he passed on to us to have a safe, and enjoyable ski in the backcountry was outstanding. We were equally impressed with his cooking skills. Axel assessed our abilities and introduced us to new terrain and snow conditons and how to navigate them safely. While our comfort zone was tested Axel always ensured we were safe. We look forward to putting this new knowledge into practice and another adventure with Axel.
