Last weekend’s MSC Avalanche Skills Course 1 combined classroom sessions at Edelweiss Lodge in Tekapo with practical field training at Mt Dobson — the perfect classroom for learning how to travel safely in avalanche terrain.

Over the course we covered:

• Understanding avalanche terrain
• Interpreting the NZ Avalanche Advisory and weather forecasts
• Route selection and safe travel techniques
• Snowpack and stability observations
• Human factors and decision-making
• Avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel skills
• Companion rescue scenarios and emergency response

Whether you’re ski touring, splitboarding, mountaineering or snowshoeing, an avalanche course gives you the knowledge and confidence to recognise hazards, make better decisions and look after your partners in the backcountry.
